The secret base of the fairies — a dreamy tree chapel that breathes and grows

When it comes to New Zealand, aside from its beautiful natural scenery that was a filming location for The Lord of the Rings, there are actually many surprising hidden attractions. In the North Island of New Zealand, there is a lively “tree chapel,” which, as the name implies, is entirely made up of trees. Surrounding the chapel are beautiful gardens, creating a dreamlike atmosphere reminiscent of a secret fairy base from a movie.

The “Tree Chapel” located in Cambridge, North Island, New Zealand, was built by Barry Cox. Spanning 3 hectares, it features a tree chapel that can accommodate a hundred people, surrounded by various gardens and maze pathways filled with different flowers, plants, and trees — an existence akin to a paradise on earth. This “planted” chapel structure was born from an idea Barry Cox had while traveling around the world. He wanted to create a one-of-a-kind dreamlike building, so he began researching suitable tree species and set up an iron frame shaped like a chapel. He then let the plants grow naturally, and only once the plants were strong enough did he remove the iron frame.
