In early spring, mountain cherry blossoms burst into full bloom across the Baxianshan Forest Recreation Area, painting the landscape in vibrant hues. The resplendent blossoms, coupled with the chirping of birds in the treetops, herald the arrival of spring in the once wintry Baxianshan.

The Baxianshan Forest Recreation Area is situated at the 33-kilometer mark of Provincial Highway 8 in Heping District, Taichung City, adjacent to the Guguan Hot Springs Scenic Area, making it one of Central Taiwan’s premier cherry blossom viewing spots. The area is home to over 1,000 mountain cherry trees. Upon arriving at the visitor center, you’ll be greeted by the bright pink smiles of blooming cherry blossoms, while the crimson-bellied tit and Taiwan yuhina flit playfully among the branches. Also known as the Taiwan cherry, the mountain cherry features soft pink, mostly single-petal flowers. When in full bloom, flocks of birds flock to sip nectar amid the blossoms, creating a lively scene that draws visitors to pause and admire—the perfect time for birdwatching in the park. After the petals fall, the area takes on another charm, with glistening red fruits and fresh green leaves offering a unique forest experience.

The Dongshi Forest District Office reports that late January to early February is the optimal time to view cherry blossoms in the Baxianshan Forest Recreation Area. Currently, about 50% of the blossoms have opened—visitors are encouraged to seize the opportunity. Additionally, during the Lunar New Year holiday, the park will implement crowd control, with a daily visitor limit of 1,500 people. It’s advisable to avoid peak hours. From February 9 (the second day of the Lunar New Year) to February 12 (the fourth day), a free shuttle bus service will operate from the toll station parking lot to the visitor center.
