Lantern Festival Fun: Explore Unique Main Lanterns Across Taiwan

On February 22, the Lantern Festival arrives, and cities across Taiwan have launched themed lantern events, adding to the festive atmosphere. This year, many lantern displays are centered around the theme of the "Monkey," featuring a variety of distinctive lanterns and lanterns, among which the recently talked-about main lantern of the Taipei Lantern Festival — the gourd monkey — and the Taiwan mole monkey from Nantou are the focus of attention.

● Taipei Lantern Festival
The 2016 Taipei Lantern Festival was held from February 20 to February 29. The most eye-catching main lantern, unprecedented in design, is the irregularly curved light sculpture main lantern "Fortune and Prosperity Monkey," created by internationally renowned multimedia art master Mr. Lin Shumin. With its gourd-like appearance representing the imagery of "fortune and prosperity," the peaches and goldfish on its body signify abundance year after year and longevity. Additionally, the Taipei Lantern Festival also integrates resources from Taipei’s 12 administrative districts to create 12 unique lantern zones, transforming the entire city into a wonderland of lights.

● Taoyuan Taiwan Lantern Festival
2016 Taiwan Lantern Festival in Taoyuan took place from Feb. 22 to March 6 at the THSR Qingpu Station area. The lantern exhibition was divided into six major themed zones and featured a 26-meter-tall main lantern of the Monkey King crafted with LED lights. This year also marked the debut of a large-scale creative lantern installation called “Universe Tower,” primarily designed with glass materials. Standing 11 meters tall and covering an area of 160 pyeong (approximately 528 square meters), the tower featured a rotating light show for four minutes every half hour, becoming one of the highlights of the Taiwan Lantern Festival.
