Waiting for the Bus with Totoro: Ghibli Animation Exhibition Scenes Unveiled

The love Taiwanese people have for Ghibli animations is evident—from the enthusiastic rush to shop at the Acorn Republic store when it opened, to the steady stream of Taiwanese visitors at the Ghibli Museum in Mitaka. Recognizing this strong support from Taiwan, Studio Ghibli, together with the event organizer United Daily News Group, has spent two years in preparation. This summer marks the first time the 【Ghibli’s Animation World】 exhibition will be held in Taiwan, taking place from June 18 to September 18 at Huashan 1914 Creative Park.

Over 23 iconic scenes from 9 animations—the largest exhibition scale yet
The organizer, United Daily News Group, stated that this exhibition brings together the largest collection of iconic scenes from major Ghibli works ever assembled. In addition to allowing fans to see up to nine beloved animations, the exhibition will also showcase over 23 classic scenes on an unprecedented scale. Visitors won’t just get to see “Castle in the Sky,” “My Neighbor Totoro,” “Kiki’s Delivery Service,” “Princess Mononoke,” “Howl’s Moving Castle,” “Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind,” “Ponyo,” and “The Wind Rises” in one place, but will also get an exclusive first look in Taiwan at precious manuscripts from “The Tale of the Princess Kaguya,” as well as limited-edition merchandise designed exclusively for this exhibition. Fans are sure to enjoy both the photo ops and shopping.

Large-scale 3D dioramas that make you feel like you’re inside a Ghibli animation
Inside the exhibition venue, all scenes are presented through large-scale 3D dioramas, immersing visitors as if they’ve stepped into the world of Ghibli. You can wait for the bus alongside life-sized Totoro, Satsuki, and Mei; sit next to No-Face on a train ride; witness Howl’s Moving Castle come to life right before your eyes; join Pazu in saving Sheeta at Laputa: Castle in the Sky; or walk into the magical bathhouse with Chihiro... Some scenes even use differently sized diorama pieces to replicate the spatial depth and distance just like in the animations—classic recreations of the worlds Ghibli has brought to life.

Designed and supervised by Studio Ghibli, all exhibits shipped directly from Japan
All scenes and exhibits in the exhibition were personally designed and supervised by Studio Ghibli, then shipped to Taiwan fully assembled. To authentically recreate the magical atmosphere of Ghibli animations, the studio invited more than ten of Japan’s top professional film set production teams to Taiwan. Aside from repositioning and arranging all exhibits, they fine-tuned every lighting, sound, and projection device, and even used hand-painting techniques to color and retouch the walls and floors of each scene. The exquisite level of detail in this exhibition speaks for itself.
