Historic Aso Shrine Collapses After 7.3 Magnitude Earthquake

In addition to the tower gate, other structures within Aso Shrine such as the pillars and walls of the Ichinomiya (First Shrine), Ninomiya (Second Shrine), and Sannomiya (Third Shrine) also sustained damage. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the 7.3 magnitude earthquake that struck at 1:25 AM Japan time on April 16 was the main quake. Numerous aftershocks with intensities of up to 6 followed in the early hours of the 16th, causing unease. The Japan Meteorological Agency even stated that aftershocks could continue for up to a week.
