The Alishan region ranges in elevation from 300 to 2,600 meters, featuring a variety of plant life including plains, tropical, warm temperate, and temperate forests. The wisteria blooming season in Ruili Village, Chiayi County, at an altitude of about 1,000 meters, is from March to April, while at an altitude of about 2,000 meters in Alishan National Forest Recreation Area, it lasts from late April to May—now is the perfect time to see the blossoms!

The wisteria visible in Alishan National Forest Recreation Area is the Japanese wisteria (also known as multi-flowered wisteria), a large woody vine with flower clusters 30–90 cm long. Its butterfly-shaped, purple to blue-purple blooms hang in cascades and sway in the wind, resembling royal beaded curtains. There is also white wisteria (also called snow-white wisteria or silver wisteria), whose pure white floral waterfall offers a serene beauty all its own.

The oldest wisteria in Alishan National Forest Recreation Area can be found in the garden next to the Alishan Guest House, Ciyun Temple, and the Alishan Hotel, having been planted during the Japanese colonial period and now over 90 years old.

Additionally, the flower-viewing path in front of the Alishan Work Station, the poetry path in Zhapingshan Park, the alpine botanical garden, and other locations all offer uniquely charming wisteria displays.
