11:17 Earthquake Alert: National Emergency Warning Activated
A felt earthquake occurred at 11:17 AM Taiwan time on May 12, with a magnitude of 5.8 on the Richter scale. The epicenter was located offshore in northeastern Taiwan, and Yilan experienced an intensity of level 6.

The magnitude of the earthquake caused widespread alarm, and many people’s phones received a national emergency alert presidential notification around 11:20 AM, reporting that the quake was estimated to be above magnitude 4. Subsequent aftershocks of magnitude 4.4 also occurred at 11:20 and 11:21 AM. Authorities urged the public to stay vigilant for their safety.
[Update] At 12:29 and 12:39, earthquakes of magnitudes 5.5 and 4.0 respectively were recorded.
