Hong Kong’s popular healing cuisine hits Taiwan — Don Don Donki’s new hotspot Donburi Tei

“Donburi Tei,” which became a hit in Hong Kong with its modern Chinese cuisine, made its Taiwan debut in early February. Its visually soothing dishes not only spearheaded a new wave of contemporary Chinese cuisine in Hong Kong but also became a must-photo spot on local social media. The stylish, casual, and playful open dining space combines a playful twist on traditional Hong Kong dim sum and has been voted “Best Cantonese Restaurant” in Hong Kong’s online polls for 2016 and 2017.

Introduced to Taiwan by the Yummy Group, Donburi Tei officially launched in Taipei on February 5. Leveraging chefs’ deep expertise in Cantonese cuisine, it created signature items such as truffle mushroom buns shaped like mushrooms, reimagined traditional egg tarts, and reinterpreted regional Chinese dishes like spicy mouthwatering chicken and black vinegar chicken petals. It also added unique Southeast Asian dishes like black pepper crab, quickly becoming an iconic eatery that others in the industry seek to emulate.

Breaking away from the traditional tea house concept of “one pot, two dim sums,” Donburi Tei positions itself as a modern tea house focused on Cantonese and Hong Kong cuisine while integrating flavors from various regions of China. It reimagines the conventional round tables, cushioned seating, and dragon-pillar décor of traditional tea houses. Instead, it offers an industrial-chic interior with soothing visual design — even transforming a ping pong table into a dining table — creating a lively and fun atmosphere for diners.

While injecting creativity and a fresh style, Donburi Tei still emphasizes a warm, communal atmosphere and dining experience, providing an option for diners to enjoy a meal comfortably even when visiting alone.
