Major Survey on Overseas Travel: Popular Scenes from Descendants of the Sun

Taiwanese people in recent years have placed greater emphasis on leisure travel, with the number of outbound tourists rising year after year. In February 2016, travel agencies conducted a major survey on travel intentions on their official websites, targeting both loyal customers and new friends who love to travel, in order to understand current preferences and habits regarding overseas travel.

According to this survey, half of the respondents mainly take short-term trips abroad once a year, but about 30% prefer longer trips of around 8–12 days. Japan remains the top travel destination, with recent highlights including cruise itineraries to Okinawa or Ishigaki Island. Additionally, Northern Europe, Germany & Switzerland, and Greece also rank high. Northern Europe boasts stunning fjord landscapes and magnificent, ancient castles and streets; Switzerland has the densest railway network, allowing travelers to easily traverse mountain ranges and ascend to high-altitude peaks of 2,000–3,000 meters.

Self-guided and group tour travel methods remain mainstream in the market, while the emerging in-depth semi-independent travel style has also gained support from nearly 20% of travelers. This shows that while tourists hope to explore freely, they still appreciate having professional services for group tours or assistance with booking various itineraries, flights, and accommodations. New travel formats such as international English semi-independent tours like Contiki and Trafalgar have also sparked a trend among travelers who favor the semi-independent style.
