The “Units Exhibition: This much, That much, How much?”—the first overseas tour of the exhibition initiated by INCEPTION Qi Yi Cultural Creativity and curated by Tokyo 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT—is here for the first time outside Japan. The exhibition brings together a curatorial team composed of nearly 30 designers, architects, scholars, and others. Using the familiar “unit” from daily life as inspiration, it transforms these omnipresent “units” in our lives into engaging and creative displays through simple, fun comparisons and rich visual, digital, and design aesthetic expressions—bringing the commonplace and even the complex “units” to vivid life.

A “unit” is a way to standardize and define things that are otherwise intangible—like air, water, matter, light, sound, and the natural environment—so they can be compared, shared, and contemplated. Measurements like meters for length, grams for weight, and minutes and seconds for time—all these diverse units surrounding us—are indispensable parts of everyday life.

With the advancement of the times, new units have emerged, such as pixels (pixel) and bytes (Byte). Of course, the designs around us also utilize various units—from architecture and industrial design to printing and packaging industries—where units are used throughout product development, including in design, production, logistics, and sales. Understanding how these “units” are used and how their usage aligns with local cultural contexts is something the organizers hope will encourage visitors to re-examine the importance of design in everyday life.
