Historic Building Transformed into Urban Museum: Taichung Prefectural Hall Reborn

After the century-old Taichung City Hall reopened on February 27, 2016, Taichung Prefectural Hall (formerly the Taichung City Government) had its urban renewal plan (originally intended to be a heritage hotel) canceled following the inauguration of Mayor Lin Chia-lung, and is now further planned to be developed into the Taichung City Museum.

After securing a central government subsidy of NT$360 million, the Taichung City Government plans to incorporate the surrounding Daiton Branch Office and other historic buildings into the development, creating a unique cultural and historical district for the Taichung City Museum. By integrating plans from the Taichung Cultural Assets Bureau and the Urban Development Bureau—including creative shops, the Green Rail Corridor project, and bike paths—the city’s cultural and leisure landscape and attractions will gain even more distinct character.

Constructed in 1913 (the second year of the Taisho era), Taichung Prefectural Hall was designed by Moriyama Matsunosuke. The first phase of construction was completed in 1918, and after four expansion projects, it was finalized in 1938. After 1945, it became the seat of the Taichung City Government. In 2010, the Taichung City Government moved its offices to the newly built municipal building. After failed urban renewal plans and unsuccessful commercial developments, Taichung Prefectural Hall is now being planned as the Taichung City Museum.
