Plum blossom viewing isn't just for Nantou—Taipei's plum and camellia blooms create a colorful relay

Winter is the peak season for plum blossoms. Across Taiwan, aside from the snow-like plum blooms in Nantou’s Xinyi Township, Taipei also boasts a plum blossom haven. While many parks in Taipei have quietly begun blooming, the Flower Trial Center on Yangmingshan has trails carpeted with camellia petals, allowing visitors to enjoy the beauty of camellias, plums, and tea flowers without traveling all the way to Nantou.

The Flower Trial Center on Yangmingshan cultivates numerous camellias, plums, and tea flowers. Camellias belong to the same family as tea flowers but resemble the delicate elegance of plum blossoms, hence their name. The difference between camellias and tea flowers lies in how their blossoms fall—tea flowers drop as whole blooms, while camellias shed their petals one by one. Previously in November, camellias bloomed early in spring, and now their fallen petals form a floral carpet on the ground, complementing the currently blooming plums and tea flowers to create a beautifully intertwined color palette.

If you’d rather not travel all the way to Nantou to see plum blossoms, consider planning a fragrant floral trip this weekend. With the relatively short blooming period of winter plum blossoms compared to other flowers, enthusiasts shouldn’t miss this opportunity to enjoy them outdoors.
