2.5-meter-tall penguin bronze statue – Suica Penguin Plaza, a new Tokyo landmark

The adorable penguin mascot from the Tokyo transportation IC card “Suica,” commonly known as the Suica Card, has been turned into a bronze statue standing in “Suica Penguin Plaza” next to Shinjuku Station. It is set to become a new popular meeting spot in Shinjuku Station, just like the Hachiko Dog statue at Shibuya Station.

Issued by JR East Japan, the “Suica” functions just like an EasyCard and is an essential transportation card for many visitors to Tokyo. JR East Japan has named the pedestrian plaza connected to the new South Exit of Shinjuku Station as “Suica Penguin Plaza,” where a 2.5-meter-tall penguin bronze statue has been installed. The statue is designed in a forward-walking pose, echoing the theme of “moving toward the future.”.
