Typhoon Malakas Approaches Taiwan, Land Warning Issued

Northern, New Taipei, and Keelung have been placed under alert. High-speed rail and Taiwan Railways are expected to operate normally on the 17th, but the northern region may be impacted by the typhoon. The latest updates will be released before 8:00 PM to confirm operations for the 17th.

The center of Typhoon Malakas is located at 20.1°N, 124.8°E, moving northwest then north-northwest at 22 km/h. The central pressure is 950 hPa, with maximum sustained winds near the center at 40 m/s and maximum gusts at 50 m/s. The radius of the typhoon-force winds is 150 km, and that of violent winds is 50 km.

The latest meteorological data (10:15 AM) shows that the center of Typhoon Malakas is over the seas southeast of Hengchun, moving northwest then north-northwest. Its storm circle has entered the Bashi Channel, posing a threat to Hualien and Taitung. The typhoon is expected to slightly intensify, with northeastern and northern Taiwan seeing rainfall starting in the afternoon of the 16th, and strong winds and rain becoming more evident on the morning of the 17th. Travel plans should take local weather conditions into special consideration.
