The Taichung Railway Viaduct Project retains the historic Taichung Station on-site

At 8:55 p.m. on October 15, the last Tze-Chiang Limited Express train departed from Taichung Railway Station, marking the end of the era of ground-level railways and attracting a large crowd of railway enthusiasts and passengers concerned about Taichung Railway Station to witness the moment. After 6:00 a.m. on October 16, TRA trains began operating on the viaduct. Meanwhile, four...viaduct stations—Fengyuan, Tanzi, Taiyuan, and Daqing Stations—were also opened simultaneously.

The Taichung Railway Viaduct Project stretches 21.7 kilometers from 1.9 kilometers north of Fengyuan Station in Taichung City to 1.4 kilometers south of Daqing Station, transforming the existing railway into an elevated structure.

The total cost of this project amounted to NT$37.241 billion. The renovated stations include five existing ones: Fengyuan, Tanzi, Taiyuan, Taichung, and Daqing. Additionally, five new elevated commuter stations were built: Lilin, Toujiacuo, Songzhu, Jingwu, and Wuquan. Among them, Songzhu and Daqing Stations, along with Taichung Metro Lines G4 and G13, have transfer mechanisms in place.

The aforementioned stations are categorized into the following five types according to current regulations:

The Taichung Railway Viaduct Project aims to provide convenient rapid transit within the metropolitan area, eliminate development barriers along the railway, and promote balanced urban growth. The main entrance of Taichung Railway Station has also been reoriented to face Fuxing Road (formerly the rear station), removing 17 level crossings along the railway, improving the urban landscape, enhancing the quality of urban life, and invigorating surrounding attractions and businesses, adding new appeal for tourism.
