The International Animation Film Festival kicks off, showcasing exciting short films from around the world with many highlights

Established just last year, the Taichung International Animation Film Festival is back this year on a larger scale. In addition to continuing the domestic competition, the festival has also expanded the scope and depth of its international film invitations. The goal is to encourage and inspire local Taiwanese animation creators to unleash their potential, enhance the diversity of film appreciation among the Taiwanese public, and serve as a friendly platform for exchange between Taiwan and the international animation community—creating a world-class stage.

This year’s film program is divided into six major sections: “Taiwan Animation: Island Specialties,” “Spotlight Directors: Meaning Beyond Words,” “Stop-Motion Animation: Capturing the Charm of Time,” “Film Festival Panorama: A Contemporary Kaleidoscope,” “Chinese Animation: Reviving Classical Aesthetics,” and “International Features: Global Visual Pulse.”

Taiwan Animation is divided into two main themes: “Taiwan Animation Nominees” and “Taiwan Animation Screenings.” “Taiwan Animation Nominees” features 48 outstanding works selected from 362 entries, including excellent short films from Taiwan’s animation industry and student creators. “Taiwan Animation Screenings” includes not only commercial works from the industry but also feature-length masterpieces by veteran animators—definitely a highlight of the festival.

“International Features” is this year’s highlight. These films can be categorized into four types: family-friendly, Asian-themed, mature content, and historical perspectives. They include adaptations of classical Chinese literature, 2D works based on the real-life story of ukiyo-e master Katsushika Hokusai, animated documentaries that recreate war, and feature-length animated films from neighboring Philippines.
