Typhoon Megi land warning issued for Taiwan; could strengthen into a severe typhoon

Typhoon No. 17, moderate typhoon Megi (international name: MEGI), issued a land warning at 11:30 AM. Strong winds and heavy rain are expected tonight, especially in northeastern Taiwan and the Greater Taipei area. On the 27th, the entire island of Taiwan may be covered by Typhoon Megi’s storm circle. The whole of Taiwan needs to step up typhoon preparedness. Flights and ships have been affected starting September 26; check for cancellations or suspensions before departure.

The center of Typhoon Megi is located at 20.6°N, 128.2°E, moving west-northwest at 21 km/h, and is expected to make landfall in the Hualien-Taitung area. The central pressure is 955 hPa, with maximum sustained winds near the center at 40 m/s and maximum gusts at 50 m/s. The radius of the typhoon-force winds is 220 km, and the radius of violent storm-force winds is 80 km.

 

The storm radius of Typhoon Megi shows signs of expanding, and its intensity continues to increase. It may reach the upper limit of a moderate typhoon or even strengthen into a severe typhoon. The entire island of Taiwan must remain on high alert.
