Rare Concept Art from Pixar’s 30th Anniversary Exhibition Goes on Public Display

Founded in 1986, Pixar Animation Studios has continually amazed audiences since the release of the world’s first 3D animated film, Toy Story. To commemorate the studio’s 30th anniversary, the “Pixar 30th Anniversary Exhibition” arrives in November to celebrate its birthday, showcasing the history of Pixar and giving fans a glimpse into the secrets behind its success.

The exhibition specially airlifts nearly 400 pieces of precious concept art to Taiwan, ranging from original charcoal sketches and color scripts to three-dimensional models, offering fans an insight into the creative process of Pixar artists. This time, the exhibition in Taiwan includes 16 feature-length animated films, displaying nearly 400 precious artworks in one go, featuring well-known titles such as the Toy Story trilogy, A Bug’s Life, Monsters, Inc., Monsters University, Finding Nemo, and The Incredibles.

Two major installations at this special exhibition—“3D Holographic Box” and “Art Landscape”—place the most iconic characters from Pixar’s classic film Toy Story into the 3D Holographic Box. Using the persistence of vision effect, Buzz Lightyear and Woody appear to come alive inside it. The “Art Landscape” condenses years of concept sketches into short videos, allowing visitors to experience, just like producers, how 2D hand-drawn drafts transform into 3D spaces, immersing themselves in the entire process of animation being brought to life from scratch.

Although Pixar’s computer technology is masterful, without a compelling story, even the most advanced effects can’t move audiences. At the exhibition, the founder and creative director John Lasseter shares the golden rules of successful animation with the audience: an attention-grabbing “story,” memorable “characters,” and a realistic “world.”
