According to a survey by the UK’s *The Economist*, Damascus, the capital of Syria, has been ranked number one.
Damascus has been inhabited for 10,000 years, making it the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world. Since the outbreak of the Syrian civil war in 2011, this once-tragic city has known no peace. Shrouded in the shadow of war, the military has continued to use highly destructive cluster bombs in airstrikes, and even resorted to chemical weapons. The result is a city left in ruins, with ancient buildings that are thousands of years old completely destroyed. Countless people have died, and hundreds of thousands have been forced to flee their homes.
The smoke of gunfire has turned what was once a beautiful Damascus into a hellish landscape. Its former glory has long vanished, and its place at the top of this ignominious list as the “least livable city” is a sobering reminder of the cruelty of war.
