Essential Information for Watching the First Sunrise of 2017 in Orchid Island

Chasing the first sunrise of the new year has become a popular activity in recent years. As we welcome 2017, another wave of sunrise-chasing enthusiasm is expected to sweep across Taiwan. Popular spots such as Sanxiantai in Taitung and the Northeast Coast are top choices for witnessing the first light of the new year, and many people are already gearing up for it. According to the Central Weather Bureau, the earliest sunrise on mainland Taiwan on New Year’s Day 2017 will occur in Dongqing, Orchid Island, Taitung, at 6:33 AM. The earliest sunrise on the main island will be at Longkeng, Kenting, Pingtung, at 6:35 AM.

Aside from chasing the first sunrise of the new year, this year’s final sunset is equally captivating. According to weather bureau data, the latest sunset in Taiwan occurs on Taiping Island at 6:12 PM. On the main island, the latest sunset can be seen in Anping, Tainan; Sizihwan, Kaohsiung; and Guanshan, Pingtung, all at 5:25 PM.
