Preserve the ecosystem: Penghu’s “Parting of the Seas” to ban island landings from April — regulated walking trail area

The “Parting of the Seas” phenomenon between Bei’liao and Chiyu islets in Penghu has become a popular destination for visitors in recent years. However, due to the time-specific nature of the tidal display, crowds often gather suddenly. To protect marine ecology and ensure visitor safety, the Penghu National Scenic Area Administration will enforce regulations starting in April. During the peak season from April to September, between 6:00 AM and 6:30 PM, access will be limited to a 7.5-meter zone on either side of the centerline of the walking trail, and landing on the islet will be prohibited afterward. The administration stated that boundary control lines and informational signs will be set up to remind visitors.

The Bei’liao to Chiyu islet (Parting of the Seas) area has become one of Penghu’s must-see spots. However, according to ongoing geological monitoring by the administration, the Chiyu islet has shown signs of deformation and potential landslides. To protect the geological environment and prevent risks from visitors unaware of the terrain, the administration, after consulting with local government bodies and community groups, decided to implement these control measures starting this April.

For the Parting of the Seas area, future opening hours will be from 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM daily (during the peak season from April to September, specific days with early morning or evening tides will allow access from 6:00 AM to 6:30 PM). The walking trail access will be limited to a 7.5-meter zone on either side of the centerline, and “Chiyu Islet: No Landing” rules will also be enforced.

The Penghu National Scenic Area Administration reminded visitors and related businesses to follow the management regulations when experiencing the tidal event. Boundary control lines will be set up along both sides of the trail centerline, and informational signs will alert visitors. Once the administrative notices are officially issued, violators may face penalties.

Additionally, the administration will explore community-based management approaches, develop in-depth guided tours, and train local residents as guides or interpreters to enhance both the visitor experience at the Parting of the Seas and support community development.
