Love eating sashimi? Beware of ingesting worms too. A man in California, USA, who insists on eating sashimi every day, recently discovered something squirming in his anus while using the toilet—only to realize he had just passed a worm about 1.6 meters long.
Dr. Kenny Bahn revealed on a podcast that when the patient visited the emergency room, he initially claimed to be suffering from bloody stools but later admitted that he had actually passed an extremely long worm in the toilet. The man explained that the worm was wriggling between his buttocks, and he only noticed its full length as he struggled to expel it. It measured around 1.6 meters. Calmly, the man used a used roll of toilet paper to wrap up the worm and brought it to the hospital.
According to the Daily Mail, the man admitted he had never traveled abroad but had a strong love for sashimi, eating salmon sashimi almost every day. Therefore, doctors speculated that he likely ingested parasites while consuming fresh raw salmon. Last year, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released a report stating that wild salmon caught in Alaska were found to contain Japanese tapeworms. Eating them raw could lead to parasite infection. It's not just Asian fish that carry the Japanese tapeworm—salmon caught off the Pacific coast of the United States may also be infected.
