While heavy snow hit Hokkaido in December, the first snow in places like Kyoto and Nara arrived on December 28, 2016. On the morning of the 28th, the temperature in Kyoto was only 1.3°C. The popular Kyoto attraction—the Kinkaku-ji, which was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994—was also adorned with a “snow coating,” with its roof covered in white snow, creating a beautiful scene that is rare and fleeting.

In addition, Nara and Kobe saw their first snow around 7:00 AM Japan time on December 28, about 22 days and 16 days earlier than usual, respectively. Those planning to visit the Kansai region of Japan in the near future should prepare warm winter clothing and stay alert to local snow and wind conditions.
