The 80-centimeter-wide mysterious trail of Taroko offers breathtaking cliffside views right beneath your feet

Eastern Taiwan is rich in natural wonders, featuring the majestic Huatung Valley and the expansive Pacific coastline. Few places in the world can offer two such distinct and spectacular landscapes in one region, but Taiwan’s Hualien and Taitung are among them. While Taroko National Park is a well-known attraction, one of its lesser-known gems is the mysterious Zhuilu Cliff Trail—a must-visit for hikers.

The Zhuilu Cliff is entirely composed of marble rock formations. Due to continuous uplift of the land and the strong erosive force of the Liwu River cutting downward, which penetrated the southeastern ridge of the Triangle Mountain while the marble proved resistant to collapse, the steep cliff was formed (Image source / Taroko National Park)
The Zhuilu Ancient Trail is located above the Zhuilu Cliff, stretching 16 kilometers in length between altitudes of 750 to 780 meters. With cliffs along much of the route, some sections of the trail are as narrow as just 80 centimeters at their widest point, making it highly challenging. This area is also the only historical preservation zone within Taroko National Park.
