Taoyuan Airport MRT releases VR front-car footage; operational plan to be announced before Lunar New Year

Among the41improvement items proposed by the Ministry of Transportation and Communications' inspection team,8there were “pre-operational improvement items” and33post-operational improvement items. Even after the line begins service, there will inevitably be areas that need further improvement, and these are all aspects that the Taoyuan Rapid Transit Corporation (Taoyuan MRT) must work on. The Taoyuan MRT and the Taiwan High Speed Rail Bureau will establish an operational improvement task force to complete these improvements with the utmost diligence, making the airport MRT safer, more comfortable, and more efficient, and establishing it as a milestone in Taiwan’s public infrastructure development.

Inspection committee members spent two consecutive days meticulously examining each station and facility, includingA1Taipei Main Station,A3New Taipei Industrial Park Station,A13Airport Terminal 2 Station,A11Kengkou Station, Luzhu Depot,A8Chang Gung Memorial Hospital Station,A21Huanbei Station,A19Sports Park Station,A18THSR Taoyuan Station, Qingpu Depot, and the Operations Control Center. They also inspected various systems and facilities, such as the pre-departure check-in procedures and baggage equipment, station water loop systems, accessibility features, transfer and connecting transport arrangements, train equipment, and trackside infrastructure. The inspectors also simulated potential issues with the pre-departure check-in process and evaluated the Taoyuan MRT staff's training, equipment operation, and emergency response capabilities through practical drills.

The Airport MRT has progressed from the testing phase, with the Taoyuan MRT taking early charge of operational simulation. This includes IST (System Integration Testing), PRSR (Pre-Revenue Service Running), and system stability testing (seven consecutive days of operations following the schedule, with a delay rate not exceeding 1% and no more than two incidents of delays over five minutes). On January 1, 2017, the Taoyuan MRT released its first VR driver’s cab video, inviting travelers across Taiwan to experience the feeling of “sitting in the driver’s seat” ahead of time. Paired with the energetic music of the band Fire EX., passengers were invited to virtually take the driver’s seat and enjoy the full scenic route of the Airport MRT through their eyes and technology.

The Taoyuan MRT Corporation will further finalize a comprehensive operational plan. It is expected to announce the Airport MRT’s operational schedule before Lunar New Year. The initial plan includes a one-month trial run, with the first two weeks dedicated to group trial rides and the next two weeks to individual trial rides, to enhance familiarity with the operating system. Following the trial period, the line will officially open to the public. In the first month after official launch, fares will be offered at a 50% discount to encourage more people to use the Airport MRT.
