A Hidden Emerald Gem: Taiwan’s Version of Blue Pond in a Fir Forest

Taiwan is one of the islands with the highest density of high mountains in the world. These towering peaks are majestic and rugged, and among them, the selected Hundred Mountains are renowned for their wonder, danger, steepness, beauty, and distinct, undulating landscapes. Climbing the Hundred Mountains has become an important goal for many Taiwanese hiking enthusiasts. One stunning hidden scenic spot on the Hundred Mountains — Hehuan Mountain North Peak — can be found about a 10-minute walk down the left side of the reflector panel on the North Peak Trail. Nestled within a fir forest lies “Taiwan Pond.”

Originally named “Bi Pond,” Taiwan Pond is famous for its shape resembling that of Taiwan Island. Its green waters are formed from snow and ice melt in winter as well as accumulated rainfall.A glacial lake formed over millennia,it is a naturally occurring lake.Hidden among the trees, serene and elegant, it shimmers in the sunlight like a green gem. With the moderate-to-easy hiking difficulty rating among the Hundred Mountains, this spot is suitable for general hikers and visitors looking to enjoy this beautiful sight. The breathtaking view after a trek through the mountains is sure to make the journey worthwhile.
