[The Small-Town Doctor] is the third feature film by director Thomas Lilti. Moving away from his documentary roots, Lilti instead uses film and writing to narratively capture the medical truths of our time. Through a simple and warm perspective, the film reveals the daily interactions between the small-town doctor and the residents. With the arrival of a new doctor from the city, the relationships between the residents and the doctor evolve in unexpected ways, subtly highlighting the personalities of the two characters and their true selves.

Dr. Jean-Pierre (François Cluzet) has been the only doctor in a remote rural town for over thirty years, treating everyone there. His duties even extend to checking electric and water meters, and he helps female residents deal with domestic violence issues. But one day, he is diagnosed with a brain tumor. Reluctantly, he begins searching for a doctor willing to serve in the countryside.

The doctor sent to replace him is a young and beautiful woman. He is highly critical and almost harsh toward her, since she may soon become the only doctor in town. The lively and attractive new doctor quickly bonds with the residents, and suddenly, he realizes he might not be as irreplaceable as he thought. At the same time, he notices a subtle romance beginning to bloom...
