CNN Travel once listed fifty terrifying activities that one must try before dying, meaning those who aren’t afraid of death are welcome to take on the challenge — and volcano boarding is ranked second. It’s one of the most popular emerging extreme sports in the past decade, and Cerro Negro Volcano is the birthplace of this activity.

Arriving in León, Nicaragua, the journey to go volcano boarding on Cerro Negro is not an easy one. It takes about 1–2 hours to climb up the 728-meter-high Cerro Negro Volcano. Without any supports or ropes, each participant has to carry a board weighing around five kilograms and endure temperatures of up to 40 degrees Celsius while climbing the volcano for an hour — a process that truly tests one’s physical endurance.

Cerro Negro Volcano is currently the best choice for experiencing volcano boarding. The volcanic gravel ranges from the size of sand grains to that of fists, so specific clothing is required for protection during the activity. The adventurer wore a jumpsuit and goggles, and simply rode a wooden board down the slope. The thrill level instantly skyrockets as you descend from an active volcano nearly two hundred stories high at speeds of up to 80 kilometers per hour — one of the most exhilarating ways to experience extreme sports.
