Star Wars-themed Designs, Laser Light Shows, Fire-Breathing Performances & Hot Air Balloon Carnival at Shimen Reservoir

The 2017 Taoyuan Shimen Reservoir Hot Air Balloon Carnival takes place from June 17 to June 25. To allow more hot air balloon enthusiasts to get up close and personal and experience the thrill of soaring, this year’s event has been extended to nine days. In addition to the highly popular tethered hot air balloon rides from last year, there will also be nighttime laser light music performances on weekends, showcasing the balloons in a whole new light. The weekends are packed with excitement, while weekdays offer a variety of enriching activities.

The Shimen Reservoir Hot Air Balloon Carnival was first held at the reservoir last year, offering visitors in northern Taiwan a dreamlike opportunity to see hot air balloons up close. This year, not only has the event duration been extended, but organizers also brought the balloons into the city ahead of schedule on June 1 during the event press conference. A balloon was displayed at the arts and cultural performance center, allowing city dwellers to enjoy the magical sight of these colorful giants and building anticipation for the main event. More balloons are set to take flight over Shimen Reservoir, promising an epic hot air balloon spectacle.

Star Wars Storm Hits: Darth Vader & Yoda-Themed Balloons Make a Cool Entrance
Star Wars fans are in for a treat—this year’s event will feature specially displayed Darth Vader and Yoda-themed hot air balloons, marking the first time such character balloons are introduced in northern Taiwan, as well as their first-ever joint appearance in the Taiwanese sky. These two impressively lifelike and massive character balloons—Darth Vader stands 26 meters tall and 21 meters wide, while Yoda measures 19 meters tall and 28 meters wide—require more complex craftsmanship than standard balloons. Witnessing these large, hyper-realistic balloons take shape is one of this year’s must-see highlights. The sheer scale and visual impact of these character balloons are truly awe-inspiring, and experiencing them in person is even more special. In line with the Star Wars theme, the city government will host a Star Wars Day on June 17. All cosplayers dressed as Star Wars characters are welcome to gather at designated times for a chance to win free double tickets for a hot air balloon free flight.

Hot Air Balloon Ride Experiences Limited to Morning and Evening Slots
Hot air balloon tethered rides have very strict weather requirements. After evaluation by professional teams, the most suitable time slots are early morning (5:30 AM) and late afternoon (4:30 PM). Visitors who wish to experience a hot air balloon ride can make advance reservations through the event’s official website. Each session is limited to 100 participants (registration for the four morning and afternoon sessions from June 17 to June 20 opens at 10:30 AM on June 12, and registration for the five morning and afternoon sessions from June 21 to June 25 opens at 10:30 AM on June 19). The fee is NT$500 per person, with an additional 20% discount for those holding a citizen card or for residents of Taoyuan. This offers everyone a unique perspective to enjoy the scenic views of Shimen South Park Ecological Park and the back reservoir.

A Variety of Exciting Activities to Delight Both Adults and Kids
In addition to hot air balloon rides, the event also features many other exciting experiences. These include the “Walk-In Exploration Tour” where you can step inside a hot air balloon, outdoor games, and much more, all contributing to a lively atmosphere. On weekends, there are special activities such as the PLAY BALL inflatable zone, a stamp-collecting event, and open-air concerts. Additionally, visitors who spend over NT$500 at local live fish restaurants, reservoir yachts, or event stalls can enjoy activities like grassland zorbing or bubble soccer.
