Long queues at Taoyuan Airport’s departure halls? It turns out the airport has been facing “severe overcrowding.”

As Lunar New Year approaches, it is peak travel season for Taiwanese residents flying abroad. However, even if you choose to fly during non-national holidays, crowds at Taoyuan International Airport are still unlikely to be any smaller. According to the latest statistics from the Civil Aeronautics Administration under the Ministry of Transportation, Taoyuan Airport faced a “severe overcapacity” issue last year.

Today, the Central News Agency reported that the current permitted capacity of Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 at Taoyuan Airport combined is about 34 million passengers annually. However, according to the Civil Aeronautics Administration, last year’s total number of inbound and outbound passengers reached 45 million, far exceeding the approved capacity of the existing terminals. Moreover, the ongoing construction of Terminal 3 is not expected to be completed until the end of 2020 at the earliest.

With Lunar New Year coming up, Taoyuan Airport will soon enter another peak travel period. In response, Taoyuan Airport Corporation stated that last year they increased the number of check-in counters and coordinated with aviation police to speed up security checks based on passenger volume. Even so, before the new terminal opens, travelers planning to go abroad will have to endure the wait—try not to let long queues ruin your travel mood.
