Latest hotspot for train enthusiasts: The 80-year-old Taipei Railway Workshop opens for visits

Built in 1935 and known as the birthplace of Taiwan’s trains, the Taipei Railway Workshop was designated as a national historic site in its entirety in 2015, and restoration efforts began. After six years of restoration, the Taipei Railway Workshop started accepting group reservation requests for guided tours on July 19, and the news immediately generated a lot of interest.It also marked the first case of a restored historic site in Taiwan.The guided tours are led by retired employees of the Taipei Railway Workshop.，They take visitors to witness the restoration of this national historic site.

The Taipei Railway Workshop preserves the original site from its establishment in 1935 and the expansions made during the 1950s. In addition to seeing the development history of railway technology, such as steam locomotives, diesel-electric locomotives, and railway electrification, visitors can also see the Roman-style grand bathhouse and the self-propelled train once known as the “British lady,” the Tze-Chiang Limited Express.

The Taipei Railway Workshop is the largest national historic site in Taiwan’s history. During the six-year restoration period, the first phase involved the planning, design, and restoration of the culturally rich General Office and Staff Bathhouse; the second phase focused on the cultural asset restoration of the Power Room, Diesel Workshop, and Forging Workshop; the third phase included the Assembly Workshop and projects needed for establishing the museum, such as research, collection, and exhibition facilities.
