Banqiao is one of Taiwan’s most “historic” districts. Nestled in an alleyway opposite Longshan Temple in Wanhua, “Mangge Shiyi” is a secondhand bookstore and antique shop. The store houses a collection of rare historical books in both Chinese and foreign languages, neatly categorized and displayed, waiting to be rediscovered by the right people. In addition to secondhand CDs, vinyl records, picture frames and art pieces, dishes, calligraphy and paintings, vases, and even Buddha statues, it’s less of a secondhand bookstore and more of a cultural and artistic space that dazzles treasure hunters.

Established in 2005, “Mangge Shiyi” is the second secondhand bookstore opened by owner Hu Jianping. Originally from Wanhua, the owner aimed to bring music, culture, and art to the area. The name “Mangge” refers to the old name for Wanhua (Mengjia), while “Shiyi” means “recovering what was discarded.” Just the name itself leaves a lasting impression.

“Mangge Shiyi” is located in a century-old traditional Min-style building, with its exterior constructed from red bricks and adorned with decorative floral tile waistbands. The wooden door is entwined with climbing plants, and its weathered appearance tells the story of a century gone by. Even before stepping inside, the strong nostalgic vibe pulls you in like a magnet.

The treasure-hunting experience is delightful. The store offers wooden long antique-style tables and chairs for resting, and hand-painted lanterns hanging from the ceiling add a delightful touch of decor. You can order a coffee or tea, find a quiet corner, and immerse yourself in the world of books, letting your thoughts drift to another time and place. More uniquely,photography is not allowed inside the store. If you wish to take photos, you must first ask the staff.

Most people’s impression of secondhand bookstores is that they are old, shabby, and messy, but Mangge Shiyi defies these stereotypes, giving the secondhand bookstore a new lease on life. Even if you don’t read, you can still quietly enjoy the nostalgia preserved within, tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the outside world. It’s a place where “old-soul” literary youths are bound to lose themselves.
