Repair work begins: Japan’s Kumamoto Castle keep to close from May

Kumamoto Castle, a renowned tourist attraction in Kyushu, Japan, suffered severe damage during the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake. The castle gates, stone walls, and other century-old structures collapsed, while the tiles on the keep were left cracked and broken. Starting this year, a series of restoration projects have been initiated at the castle. From May onward, the keep will undergo repairs and will be closed to visitors.

For safety reasons, the entire Kumamoto Castle keep will be covered with tarps during the restoration, which is expected to last from May until January 2019. Restoration of the smaller keeps will begin in August this year, with the completion date yet to be determined. Therefore, those planning to visit the keep at Kumamoto Castle should pay attention to its opening status.
