Travel Trend No. 1: Tech Takes Over – Travel Becomes More Convenient
As we move into 2018, technology is playing an increasingly vital role in travel. With the progress of artificial intelligence and digital technology, travelers now have greater access to travel information. Nearly one-third (29%) of travelers say they would allow a computer to automatically arrange their upcoming trips based on their past travel history; half of the travelers also said they wouldn’t mind if technology replaced human customer service as long as their issues were resolved smoothly.

In addition, the popularity of VR is set to soar again. Nearly 65% (64%) of travelers hope to preview destinations through virtual reality (VR) before making a booking decision; half of the travelers say that destination recommendations and curated local attractions tailored via technology will entice them to travel again.

Travel Trend No. 2: Step Out of Your Comfort Zone and Check Off Bucket List Destinations
Among nearly half (45%) of travelers who have a “must-do-in-a-lifetime” list, over 85% hope to achieve at least one item within the next year. For many, a memorable journey holds more appeal than material indulgences, and the desire for unforgettable experiences drives them to embark on new trips time and time again.

“Visiting world wonders” is the most common item on bucket lists, with nearly 47% of travelers hoping to witness the beauty of globally renowned sights in 2018. Meanwhile, almost 35% of travelers want to embark on a culinary adventure abroad in the coming year, savoring authentic local flavors. Other popular bucket list items include island getaways, world-famous theme parks, road trips, cultural immersion, and off-the-beaten-path explorations—all frequently mentioned by Booking.com users.

Travel Trend No. 3: Return to Familiar Places and Relive Childhood Memories
In the coming year, as many as one-third (34%) of travelers hope to revisit places they loved as children, exploring them in new ways. These travelers say that memories of family trips are often the most cherished, and the familiarity and happiness these old places bring even surpass those of childhood friendships or time spent with pets.

Millennials (aged 18–34) are especially keen on such trips, with over 44% planning to return to their favorite family travel destinations in 2018. Moreover, as more travelers enjoy sharing their lives on social media, these nostalgic, atmospheric spots are expected to regain the spotlight in 2018, attracting even more visitors.

Travel Trend No. 4: Pop Culture Drives Travel Decisions
Pop culture will be a major travel influencer in 2018, with TV shows, movies, sports, and social media exerting growing influence over travel and booking choices. For example, recommendations from bloggers and YouTube influencers will serve as inspiration for many travelers (39%); destinations featured in television, film, and music videos carry significant sway (36%); and over one-fifth (22%) of travelers plan trips around major sporting events—with more than 43% already planning to attend the soccer matches in Russia this summer.

Additionally, hit TV shows will also drive travel trends in 2018, with the most popular being Game of Thrones (29%, leading to Croatia, Spain, and Iceland), Sherlock and The Crown (21% and 13%, both to London), Billions (13%, to New York), and Entourage (10%, to Los Angeles).
