Travel Center / Comprehensive Report
Are you an annoying passenger? Although some improper behaviors are not explicitly prohibited, there are still unspoken rules on airplanes. If you don’t want to get dirty looks from others,Megan Elliottpresents the “6 things you shouldn’t do on a plane.” Even those who consider themselves polite should avoid these mistakes.
1. Reclining your seat without asking the passenger behind you
There has always been debate over whether it's okay to recline your seat freely. Those in favor argue that passengers have every right to recline their seats, while opponents say that when the person in front leans back, it inevitably invades the space of the passenger behind. According to experts, you should politely ask the person behind you first. Scott McCartney, a travel expert at The Wall Street Journal, also wrote an article titled “Then, Go Slow,” in which he mentioned that asking first is basic courtesy and can prevent upsetting others.
2. Being rude to flight attendants
Flying itself isn’t easy for anyone. If your flight is delayed or canceled, flight attendants aren’t your punching bag. Smile and say “hello” when boarding—basic respect and politeness are necessary. Also, avoid touching them, such as tapping them with your finger, just to get their attention.

3. Drinking too much alcohol
If you’re a frequent flyer, feel free to enjoy alcoholic drinks, but excessive drinking can make you quite obnoxious—annoying your seatmate, the flight attendants, or even assaulting crew members or other passengers, which could lead to flight delays. According to The Wall Street Journal, about a quarter of all incidents worldwide are caused by drinking too much alcohol or taking drugs. Psychology Today also points out that the hangover and fatigue the next day will make you regret it.
● ETtoday News Cloud reminds you: Don’t drink and drive, and don’t drive after drinking.
4. Not using the overhead bin properly
When stowing carry-on luggage in the overhead bin, make the most efficient use of the space possible. Place larger suitcases, coats, shopping bags, and the like in order. Smaller bags can go under the seat in front of you—don’t waste space with unnecessary items.
5. Talking nonstop to the passenger next to you
Some people are very enthusiastic and keep trying to chat with the person next to them. According to a 2015 Expedia survey, 43% of people find being approached by their seatmate annoying—not everyone wants to make friends on a plane. If the person next to you only responds with one word, or puts on headphones or reads a book, it means they don’t want to talk.

6. Kicking the seatback of the seat in front of you
According to an Expedia survey, kicking the seatback was rated as the most disliked behavior by passengers, with 61% saying it’s the most frustrating thing. Usually, it’s kids doing the kicking. Wendy Perrin suggests parents take off their kids’ shoes or give them a favorite stuffed toy to distract them. You could even buy a drink for the passenger in front who’s being disturbed.
