As a hardworking professional, there’s nothing more therapeutic than ordering food with colleagues. In New Taipei City, there’s a small but well-known handmade steamed bun shop in the online shopping scene. Here, you can enjoy cheese buns that burst with gooey, stringy cheese — they even stuff three-cup chicken drumsticks and lion’s head meatballs inside the buns. It’s become one of the must-order group-buying foods for office workers, perfect for breakfast, afternoon tea, or even a picnic on the weekend.
The flavors here are truly unique. Located in Yonghe District, New Taipei City, Yuanwei Lechu specializes in handmade gushing-cheese steamed buns. Each flavor showcases the owner’s creativity — like the three-cup chicken drumstick bun that fuses Taiwanese three-cup chicken with Western-style cheese, and even lion’s head meatballs turned into buns.

Aside from offering rare and distinctive flavors, what makes Yuanwei Lechu most popular among netizens is its stringy cheese bun series. From the kids’ favorite golden corn cheese bun, to the golden ingot bun filled with sweet potato bits and golden cheese, and the golden lotus bun made with pumpkin mash and cheese. When you take a freshly steamed cheese bun out of the electric cooker and peel it open, you’re greeted with an irresistibly “evil” cross-section as golden cheese oozes out, making your mouth water.

The sweet potato mozzarella bun is stuffed with generous amounts of mozzarella, and when peeled open, the cheese stretches into long strands, cascading out like a waterfall. Take a hot bite and the cheese and sweet potato melt together in your mouth — absolutely delightful.
Yuanwei Lechu can be ordered online, but you can also buy freshly baked buns directly at their Yonghe store. The prices in-store are slightly cheaper than online — around NT$15 to NT$30 per bun — but some of the more popular flavors sell out quickly. It’s safer to place an online order first and then pick up in person.
