Massive straw maze makes its debut – limited-time treasure hunt and hide-and-seek!

To promote the ban on open-air straw burning, Chiayi County’s Environmental Protection Bureau spent one month constructing a large straw maze on Zhongxing Road in Taibao City. Starting December 15 for two consecutive weeks, it invites both adults and children to come explore the maze and play hide-and-seek. Through a fun game format, the event advocates for straw reuse in hopes of eradicating the air-polluting practice of open-air straw burning, in line with the county magistrate’s push for eco-friendly agricultural circular economy policies.

During the autumn-to-winter period when the second rice harvest takes place, it’s common to see farmers openly burning straw, severely polluting air quality. The Environmental Protection Bureau collaborated with the Taibao Shuiniucuo Straw Workshop to create Chiayi County’s first large-scale straw maze (located on farmland next to No. 200, Section 1, Zhongxing Road, Taibao City), naming it “Chiayi Loves Straw, Water Buffalo Loves the Maze.” From December 15 to 29, it will be open daily from 9 AM to 4 PM, giving parents and kids alike the chance to relive the joy of childhood hide-and-seek.

This maze was crafted using straw harvested from 7,300 square meters of farmland, weighing a total of 4.5 metric tons. Inside, the maze features a variety of straw-woven artworks and displays promoting the avoidance of open-air straw burning. Visitors can simply take photos and check in to redeem free DIY activities. Throughout the event period, there will also be more exciting surprises waiting for everyone to discover while they explore – the whole family is welcome to come play hide-and-seek.
