One of the Seven Wonders of the World, the Taj Mahal is a must-visit destination for travelers to India. However, Indian authorities are now considering limiting both the number of visitors and their stay duration. The proposed plan aims to cap daily visitors at 40,000 and restrict each person’s visit to a maximum of three hours. This restriction stems from safety concerns due to excessive tourist traffic—incidents of overcrowding and injuries have already occurred at the entrance.
On weekends and public holidays, visitor numbers can reach up to 70,000 per day, leading to frequent injuries caused by overcrowding. In recent years, with India's industrial development, the Taj Mahal has suffered from acid rain erosion—its milky white marble facade now shows yellow stains, cavities have appeared in the tomb chambers, and the silver doors have darkened. All of these issues make it imperative for India to give the Taj Mahal some rest.
Moreover, the Yamuna River near the Taj Mahal is severely polluted, with high levels of chemicals in the water. Experts believe that the foundation of the Taj Mahal may eventually collapse. Ecologists have suggested planting mulberry trees around the Taj Mahal to absorb sulfur dioxide. As a result, the Indian government has begun large-scale mulberry tree planting and established the Taj Protection Zone.
