Too many tourists, locals really suffering: In recent years, Japan has been promoting tourism to boost its economy, attracting visitors from around the world. But the sudden influx of tourists has left locals overwhelmed. Just from Taiwan alone, hundreds of flights fly directly to major Japanese cities every day—not to mention the volume from other countries. Kyoto, known as the ancient capital with a history of a thousand years, is a top destination for tourists. While it brings crowds and revenue, the poor behavior of some tourists—especially the appalling state of toilets left behind—has become unacceptable to residents.

According to CNN, to address the issues caused by the surge in tourist numbers, the Kyoto city government has decided to publish an etiquette guide. It informs visitors about everyday customs and manners in Japan to help them avoid cultural taboos. The guide also includes sections such as “how to use toilets” and “things not to do in Kyoto.”

The report points out that in the “things not to do in Kyoto” list—ranked by level of offensiveness—the least welcome behavior is tipping; next is opening taxi doors yourself, since taxi doors in Japan are automatic and controlled by the driver. Smoking in non-smoking areas outdoors is also not customary and could result in a ¥1,000 fine. Other frowned-upon actions include cycling while drunk—the penalty for which can be as high as ¥1 million and up to five years in prison.

Therefore, when traveling to Kyoto or anywhere else, it’s advisable to familiarize yourself with local customs and etiquette to avoid offending residents.
