Korean transport such as subways and buses currently have no regulations on eating or drinking — consuming food or beverages on board is unrestricted, and there are even food stalls selling snacks and drinks inside subway stations. However, the Seoul government stated that carrying drinks on buses might cause spills due to sudden jolts, potentially endangering the safety of other passengers. As a result, they have decided to implement a policy banning passengers from bringing drinks or food on board, and bus drivers may also refuse boarding based on the situation.

Although many people now choose to bring takeaway food and drinks for convenience and to save time during their commute, this often leads to chaos or disturbances due to the instability of bus rides. This new regulation by the Seoul government is expected to be implemented as early as January 19, 2018.
