Taiwan boasts many great spots for watching the sunrise. At dawn, the first light breaks through the sky, casting soft rays through the clouds and dyeing the mountains and sea in vibrant hues of silk. Below are six sunrise spots and ways to greet the first light, where you can also join in New Year’s Day morning activities.

1. Northeast Coast – Fulong New Year’s Sunrise

Fulong offers a romantic setting, plus performances by popular bands. At 4 AM on New Year’s Day, the stage performances kick off. This event features performances by “Shuang Band,” “Wind Music Records,” “ControlT Band,” dazzling dance performances by “Spinning Flame,” and the energizing drumming of the Gongliao Junior High School Taiko Team, all helping to build an exciting atmosphere.

2. Alishan – Sunrise Impression Concert

At the “Alishan Sunrise Impression Concert,” visitors can experience a moment of spiritual peace and emotion amid melodious music as they welcome the first light of the new year. The concert invites symphony orchestras along with renowned tenors and sopranos to perform a high-altitude, high-quality, and high-standard “triple-high” musical extravaganza at the Gaoyue Viewing Platform. (Limited exquisite gifts available on-site). Additionally, you can take the Alishan Forest Railway’s “New Year’s Day Sunrise Train” to enjoy an old-world sunrise journey.

Alishan Forest Railway “New Year’s Day Sunrise Train” tickets:
From December 30 to January 1, daily round-trip scheduled trains (Alishan No. and Zhongxing No.) will run between Chiayi and Fenqihu. Scheduled train tickets (excluding cruise trains) will be available online starting at 6 AM on December 15 (Friday).
 
Return trips for the Zhushan Sunrise Train are divided into Time Slot A and Time Slot B. Passengers can choose either slot for the return trip. Group reservations are limited to 840 people per time slot. Reservations open at 9 AM on December 12 for groups of 30 or more by phone. General ticket sales begin at Alishan Station’s 1st-floor ticket office from 1:00–5:30 PM on December 31, with a limit of 10 tickets per person until sold out.
 
To accommodate passengers traveling to Zhushan early on New Year’s Day to catch the first light, the Forest Railway’s Zhushan Sunrise Train will begin operating at 1:50 AM, with 16 scheduled departures. However, only 10 of these will be available for group reservations (until 4:25 AM), with 210 seats per departure.

3. Nantou – Jinchilun in Sun Moon Lake for the New Year’s Sunrise

Visitors can attend the New Year’s Eve fireworks party at Sun Moon Lake before heading to Jinchilun to witness the breathtaking sunrise, enjoying views such as sea of clouds, glass-like light, and the first light of dawn. Additionally, the organizers have invited well-known bands for a fantastic music event, along with a “Lucky Golden Dragon” lucky draw.
