The blue tears of Matsu are recognized by CNN as one of the world’s 15 most amazing natural wonders. The peak season runs from April to August each year, and sightings of massive outbreaks are extremely rare and almost impossible to predict. This year’s first major display occurred between 8 PM on the 15th and the early morning of the 16th, with the coasts of Nangan and Beigan glowing with shimmering blue light across the shoreline. The blue tears are actually “noctiluca scintillans,” a type of bioluminescent plankton that emits a soft blue light when disturbed by waves.
