Utopian architecture at work: Shanghai’s new landmark “Bafen Garden” showcases China’s enamel craftsmanship

According to Lonely Planet website,Bafen Garden is a new landmark in Shanghai, China. This museum is dedicated to exhibitions of artisanal enamelware, and its exterior design is highly distinctive. This rock garden also regularly serves as an event venue. Additionally, there is a café, library, office spaces, accommodation, and a restaurant, essentially operating like a cultural center. Yet, this space is filled with poetry.

It is said that the person in charge of Bafen Garden was originally the director of the Shanghai Enamel Factory. Due to changing times, enamel has been replaced by other materials. A large collection of enamelware has recently been revitalized in the form of a museum, combined with new spatial design. The reason Bafen Garden is named “Bafen” (literally “eight-tenths”) is to encourage people to avoid going overboard in life and work.

Designed by Utopia Architecture (Wutopia Lab), this cylindrical building is wrapped in white aluminum, resembling a folded fan. The enamelware exhibition is located in the circular hall, where visitors can admire some of the finest cups and plates from around the world. The garden also features a small pond and waterfall, and the floors above the fourth level offer accommodation, with each room having its own small garden.
