The world’s best job “island caretaker” gets married romantically on Dent Island, Australia

Remember the “Best Job In The World”? Ben Southall, the winner at the time, and his wife Sophee McPhee recently got married on Dent Island in the romantic Whitsunday Islands of the Great Barrier Reef, Australia.

In 2009, Briton Ben Southall stood out from 36,000 global applicants in Tourism Queensland’s “Best Job In The World” competition and ultimately won the role of the Great Barrier Reef Island Caretaker (commonly known as the reef’s “island caretaker”). Two years ago, at the Whitsundays Tourism Awards ceremony held on Daydream Island, Ben served as the emcee for the event where he first met his future wife Sophee McPhee—and they fell in love at first sight.

The couple, now living in Brisbane, returned to the Whitsunday Islands in early November and held their wedding on Dent Island. With over 100 family and friends witnessing and blessing the occasion, Sophee arrived on the fifth fairway by helicopter. During the ceremony, the bride also wore traditional Australian attire and led a dance, humorously celebrating and welcoming her British groom to Australia.

Wandering among the world heritage-listed islands of the Great Barrier Reef, the pair embarked on a magical and romantic journey in one of the most beautiful places on Earth. Starting next year, the couple will also begin a round-the-world trip to visit more romantic destinations around the globe.
