Taipei Experimental Café – Black Sugar Coffee & Bittersweet Raw Chocolate Tart!

In the bustling city, there's always a café that keeps its doors open, soothing urban souls with the gentle aroma of coffee. Hard Character Café (InsingerKaffee), located near Zhongshan Junior High School in the commercial district, sits quietly in a peaceful alley — a hidden gem for those seeking a great cup of coffee.

Originally launched online, selling their own roasted estate coffee beans, they set up a studio in Taichung and later opened a physical café in Taipei, offering both dine-in and takeaway services. Open from 7:30 AM, it serves as a warm breakfast companion for office workers. Later in the day, it welcomes those looking for a quiet workspace or a cozy spot for afternoon tea. Contrary to its name, Hard Character Café doesn’t feel tough at all — it’s warm and relaxing.

“Why the name ‘Hard Character’?” I was quite curious when I first heard it, and learned the story behind it — it was named in honor of the founder’s mother.

The coffee studio is a tribute to the founder’s mother, inheriting her name and spirit. The philosophy of overcoming strength with gentleness is infused into every aspect, from the careful selection of coffee beans to the neutral and balanced approach to running the café. “My mother has passed, but we keep her legacy alive through this brand — not just in our hearts.” I really appreciate brand concepts rooted in family emotions; such memorials hold deep meaning.

Through blue-framed windows, baristas brew coffee, the aroma wafting along with the rising steam, filling the air with the scent of freshly ground beans. There’s a semi-outdoor area in front, like a small courtyard, where you can sit and enjoy a cup of freshly bought hot coffee.

The interior isn’t very large. The left side houses the coffee bar, while the rest of the space offers spacious and comfortable seating. The gray-white walls and floors, paired with cool tones, gain a touch of warmth from the yellow lighting — a perfect match for the rich coffee aromas lingering in the air.

Besides coffee and meals, the café also displays a variety of coffee-related and food-related merchandise. Interested customers can ask the staff for purchase information.

One of the most unique items is a set of coffee cups brought back from Germany. At first glance, I thought they were hand-thrown ceramics, but they turned out to be surprisingly lightweight. They’re actually made from coffee grounds. Upon closer inspection, you can even see fine coffee residue along the rim — truly one-of-a-kind.

However, the Hard Character Café space is shared with other studios, so cultural workshops are occasionally held here, such as flower arrangement classes and Taiwanese folk culture sessions.

Throughout the café, little details evoke a strong sense of familial warmth. A cloth ruler and wooden wall imprinted with ginkgo leaves commemorate the founder’s mother, while family wedding keepsakes have become charming little decorations around the space.

Hard Character Café offers free Wi-Fi, power outlets, and unlimited seating time — a great spot for anyone needing a place to work comfortably while still being able to relax.

The café mainly serves coffee, tea, and simple sweet and savory snacks.

Black Sugar Latte – NT$150

I hadn’t particularly craved a latte in a while, let alone a black sugar latte. But perhaps due to the arrival of winter and the sudden drop in temperature, I found myself suddenly wanting something sweet and warm. That’s how I recently grew fond of black sugar lattes.

Hard Character’s black sugar latte is quite different from what I expected. Instead of caramelized, slightly burnt sugar, sweet black sugar powder is sprinkled directly on top of the thick layer of milk foam. I thought it might be overly sweet, but it turned out smooth and not cloying at all. The balance between the black sugar, milk, and coffee flavors is just right — a delicious combination.

Ethiopia Yirgacheffe Heirloom Kochere Cooperative Natural G1 – NT$180

This single-origin pour-over is made with lightly roasted beans. The flavor is fruity, with a sweet-tart strawberry-like note, followed by a refreshing floral finish. The acidity is mild and smooth, making it ideal for those new to black coffee. The cup used for this pour-over is the eco-friendly coffee-ground cup mentioned earlier, which the staff said still carries a faint roasted aroma if you get the newer ones.

Blueberry Cheesecake Tart & Raw Chocolate Tart

The desserts served here are in collaboration with a local patisserie. In addition to the blueberry and chocolate tarts sampled that day, there’s also a lemon tart option. Personally, I preferred the raw chocolate tart for its rich, bittersweet flavor and crisp tart shell. The blueberry cheesecake tart is lighter but has a relatively mild cheese filling, making the overall taste a bit one-dimensional.

Australian Meat Pie (Beef) – NT$120, Beef Cheese Croissant – NT$90

Besides sweets, there are also some simple savory options available.

The owner, who once lived in Australia, loves the flavor of Aussie meat pies, so they decided to include them on the menu. They aimed for a simpler, more authentic taste — closer to what they had in Australia, unlike the more Taiwan-style versions commonly sold nowadays.

The filling is packed with beef and cheese, paired with a warm, crispy crust — quite satisfying. There’s also a croissant option, which is also tasty. It’s best enjoyed fresh and hot to experience the crisp exterior and soft interior.

Aside from dine-in, Hard Character Café also offers takeaway coffee at a lower price than in-store. If you work nearby or are just passing by and craving coffee, stop by and grab a cup to go!

On the way out that day, I picked up a delicious mocha with beautiful latte art — I couldn’t resist taking a photo before putting the lid on.

“To serve guests a great cup of coffee and create a comfortable space for them.” Whether you want to relax and stay a while or simply enjoy a good cup of coffee, no matter your reason for coming, I believe Hard Character Coffee can meet your needs.

Turns out Taipei still has so many wonderful cafes worth exploring, tucked away in the alleys we never knew about. Next time, come sit at Hard Character, have a cup, and take one to go.
