That's the boat!! Zeppelin releases aerial photos of the Life of Pi wave pool in Taichung

As more scenes from Ang Lee’s Life of Pi continue to be unveiled across Taiwan, renowned aerial photographer Chi Po-lin recently shared an aerial photo of the “Taichung Shuinan Airport wave pool” on his Facebook page. The image shows a small white boat gently bobbing in the wave pool — the very same boat that carried Pi on the ocean in the film. This scene, which looks as if one has truly stepped into the movie, prompted netizens from mainland China to exclaim: “Taiwan, you’re amazing!”

Located at Taichung Shuinan Airport, this wave pool measures 75 meters in length, 35 meters in width, and 3 meters in depth, making it the largest wave pool in the world. It uses 12 wave machines imported from the United States, fixed within the pool, capable of generating 35 different types of waves and water textures. In the photo, the wind-shielding cargo containers surrounding the pool were designed by overseas experts to withstand typhoons. When large waves are generated in the pool, additional machines on the shore create a surrounding swirl of wind and waves.

Suspended above the containers is a black-and-white silk canopy that can simulate either night or day at any given moment. The western wall of the wave pool can also be opened to let sunlight in, creating a sunset effect. All of the ocean scenes for Ang Lee’s Life of Pi were filmed in this pool that resembles the real sea. This latest aerial photo of the wave pool released by Chi Po-lin makes viewers feel as though they’ve plunged back into Pi’s ocean odyssey — no wonder even netizens from mainland China couldn’t help but respond: “Taiwan, you rock!”
