“I stop my cab in maple woods to gaze my fill; Frost-bitten leaves look redder than early spring flowers!” Come to New Taipei City during the New Year’s Day holiday to enjoy the autumn foliage. As the winter solstice arrives, the maple leaves turn crimson, creating a stunning contrast of scarlet against lush greenery in areas such as Qiaobei Temple in Xizhi, Section 101 in Sanzhi, and Erbazi Park in Xindian. The maples commonly admired for their fall colors belong to two main families: the Liquidambar genus and the Acer genus, such as the Green Maple. Both make excellent street trees. The palmate leaves of the Liquidambar are three-lobed, while those of the Acer are five-lobed. The Green Maple, in particular, is endemic to Taiwan. The appeal of viewing maple foliage lies in watching the leaves transition from green to yellow and then to red during autumn and winter. Recently, Qiaobei Temple in Xizhi has been blanketed in brilliant red leaves. The temple architecture, its iconic double-arch bridge, and the crimson leaves create a charming, classic scene. Along Sections 2 to 4 kilometers of County Highway 101 in Sanzhi, rows of fiery red maples line the roadside, offering a breathtaking view.
