2012’s Most Popular Check-in Spots Around the World: Times Square and Disneyland Rank High

If you were to take a trip around the world, where would you most want to check in and declare “I’m here”? Recently, the social networking site Facebook released a list of the “most popular check-in spots” in 11 countries including the United States, France, the United Kingdom, and South Korea. Among them, U.S. Times Square, France’s Eiffel Tower, and South Korea’s Myeongdong shopping district all made the list.

Since Facebook launched its “Check-in” feature, a “check-in craze” has swept across the globe. With a smartphone in almost everyone’s hand, no matter where people go, they make sure to check in and share their whereabouts with friends and family. In the U.S., the hottest check-in spot is none other than New York’s Times Square, often listed as one of the must-visit places before you die. Additionally, California—beloved by Taiwanese travelers—attracts numerous check-ins at its popular attractions such as Disneyland, AT&T Park, Universal Studios, Angel Stadium, and Dodger Stadium.

The most popular check-in spot in France might come as a surprise to many Taiwanese. Topping the list is Paris Disneyland, followed by the Champs-Élysées and the Eiffel Tower. Other well-known sites in France that also made the list include the Louvre, Versailles Palace, and Notre-Dame Cathedral, all of which are quite famous among Taiwanese visitors.

In the UK, possibly due to the Olympics being held this year, most popular check-in spots are located in London. Aside from the top three—Alton Towers, Thorpe Park, and The Trafford Centre—other popular destinations include Hyde Park, Buckingham Palace, the O2 Arena, and the Olympic Village built for the London Olympics, all of which are within the top ten most checked-in locations.

Among Asian regions featured on Facebook’s check-in ranking, only Singapore, Thailand, and South Korea made the list. In Singapore, the most checked-in place is Universal Studios, followed by Marina Bay Sands, where the character “Da Ren” from the popular Taiwan drama “In Time with You” lived.

In the South Korean market, which has seen an increasing number of Taiwanese visitors in recent years, Seoul is the most popular check-in destination. Famous shopping areas such as Myeongdong (명동), the high-end shopping district of Gangnam (강남), popular group tour destinations like Lotte World and Everland (에버랜드), and Dongdaemun (동대문), known for affordable fashion, are also among the top ten most checked-in spots.
