Travel Center / Comprehensive Report
Taiwan goes crazy for containers!Kaohsiung, a harbor city born by the sea, was once the world’s second-largest container transshipment hub during the Japanese colonial period. To promote tourism and attract younger visitors, there are plenty of container-themed attractions, such as “Jihe. KUBIC” and “PAMMA Coffee x Pan Coffee x Sansi Tree,” all of which are popular spots. The 2017 Kaohsiung International Container Art Festival has also made its shiny debut.

▲ The exhibited works transformed as many as 20 containers, some of which even feature mini slides.
When it comes to container transformations, the Container Art Festival is the pioneer. Since its inception in 2001, it has become more spectacular year after year. This year’s theme, “Silver Shining Paradise – Meeting My Future Here,” is an art event dedicated to time and wisdom, ensuring that the silver-haired seniors are no longer forgotten but are invited to explore the city together.

▲ Retired containers are given new life through the skillful hands of artists.
The 2017 Kaohsiung International Container Art Festival opened today (30th) at the Pier-2 Art Center and will continue until March 4th next year. Architects have used decommissioned containers and panels to create brand-new artworks, such as the “Fan” by Foster + Partners from the UK, which transforms containers into a stage and wave-like staircases, creating a spectacular sight. In addition to container installation art, the site also features spaces like the Senior Lab, Co-Aging House, and Love Dingdong Fitness House. With its opening coinciding with the New Year holiday, it offers yet another destination for extended holidays.
