A la carte Wagyu udon is priced at 370 NT. (Provided by Marunepō)
The hottest topic in the dining scene this year has been the news of Japanese Wagyu being allowed into Taiwan. Nearly four months after the ban on importing Japanese Wagyu was lifted, hotels and restaurants have all targeted the top-tier clientele, offering the most premium cuts of Wagyu. While undeniably delicious, these offerings come with a hefty price tag that can really burn a hole in your wallet. But now, one business is taking a different approach by launching ultra-affordable Wagyu udon, available for a little under 400 NT per serving — setting a new low-price record for Japanese Wagyu consumption.
This kind-hearted establishment is the renowned Japanese udon shop “Marunepō.” Marunepō currently has seven branches across Taiwan and has built up a solid reputation over the years, thanks to the long-term support of loyal customers. In gratitude, the shop has launched a limited-time “Wagyu Udon” special. Using grade 5 Japanese Black Wagyu from their own farm, the meat boasts delicate and beautiful marbling, with a sweet and rich flavor. Paired with a refreshing bonito broth, it brings out the full umami and richness of the Wagyu.
The “Wagyu Udon” will be available nationwide at 27 outlets starting December 30, 2017, through January 1, 2018, in limited quantities. The a la carte price is 370 NT, while the set meal (including wasabi pickled potherb mustard, yam puree, and assorted tempura) is only 430 NT. Each store will limit sales to 10 bowls per day (some locations may increase the quantity depending on the situation), and supplies are limited. On New Year’s Day (January 1), the Wagyu will be upgraded for free to luxurious “Kobe beef.” For those who want to try one of Japan’s top three Wagyu varieties, don’t miss this chance.
